No doubt about it, it was my grandmother. ![]() I push back the blanket and get up.Īs I’m groping my way down the hall, the memory of the dream returns. ![]() Laura is lying next to me in perfect peace, breathing silently, sound asleep. The pattern on the carpet is symmetrical, but if you look at it for a long time, it captures your attention, gripping it until you can’t shake free. The morning sun pushes through the slats of the blind and draws fine lines in both carpet and wall. How long can I pretend I’m asleep? I would love to give up and sink back into unconsciousness, but I can’t. She’s crying so hard that the mattress is shaking. Eyes closed, I know that the voice is Laura’s, or, rather, that suddenly it’s been hers all along. At first it was a sound in my dream, but now the dream is over and the sobbing is coming from the woman next to me. I’ve already been hearing the sobbing for some time. ![]()

I have no personal knowledge of PTSD or it's affects but feel after reading this that I have a much better understanding of - and compassion for - what it might be like. The characters - both main and supporting - are so well written that I completely fell in love with them and was desperate for them to find a way through this and get to the other side. That said - please don't let that discourage you from giving this work a chance. ![]() The writing is so beautifully descriptive and I deeply felt the emotions of the main characters - their worries, anxiety, desperation, hopelessness, and sometimes terror. ![]() This sequel is the follow-up to the very good Ask, Tell and focuses on the effects of PTSD on a military surgeon and her partner after an incident during a war zone deployment. Indeed, I was about thirty pages into it before someone referred to the narrator as David, and I suddenly realised that (a) the narrator wasn’t a woman, and (b) it was autobiographical. I took it up to the Lake District with me, thinking it was a novel. Highly recommended especially to those tired of the "environmental books" that don't really offer kids a way to make a difference in their world. The illustrations are so detailed and really invite exploration to get the entire story. But, what starts as one neighbor man's desire to plant something in his yard (and the girl's curiosity) soon grows into a neighborhood-wide effort to beautify and "nature-fy" the neighborhood, especially using native plants. Through illustrations only, we follow a little girl from her birth day as she grows up we see only the backyard and a bit of the city through the window but, oh, what a story that little glimpse tells! For it is not only the story of the girl growing up, but of the neighborhood becoming more aware of its problems, most especially in that it is not a very attractive place to live and no one seems to have any pride in it. I LOVED this book! It is so beautiful and heartfelt, so detailed and thoughtful and sweet and inspiring. ![]() |
